Bank Transfer Payment — How It Works When Selling Your Car

We pay for every car by bank transfer. This guide explains exactly how the payment process works, what to expect and why bank transfer is the safest method for a transaction of this size.

Why we use bank transfer

Bank transfer — specifically Faster Payments — is the most transparent, traceable and secure method of payment for a private vehicle purchase. Unlike cash, it creates an immediate record on both sides. Unlike a cheque, it does not require a clearing period and cannot bounce after the fact.

We do not pay by cash for any vehicle purchase. This protects both parties and is standard practice for reputable car buyers.

How the payment works on the day

  1. We agree the final offer in person after the inspection
  2. You provide your bank account details (sort code and account number)
  3. We initiate the Faster Payments transfer before leaving
  4. The funds typically appear in your account within minutes (Faster Payments is near-instant)
  5. You can check your banking app on the spot before signing the V5C

What if the transfer takes longer?

Faster Payments typically arrives within seconds to a few minutes. Occasionally, bank-side delays or fraud prevention checks can cause a short delay. If your bank flags the transfer as unusual (large amounts may trigger a review), simply contact your bank. The payment will clear — it is not reversible by the sender once sent.

What bank details do I need to provide?

Your UK sort code (6 digits) and account number (8 digits). Make sure you give us the correct details — bank transfers sent to incorrect account numbers can be very difficult to recover.

Is there a maximum amount for Faster Payments?

Most UK banks allow Faster Payments of up to £250,000 per transaction, though individual banks set their own limits. For higher-value vehicles, we discuss the payment method in advance to ensure there are no barriers on either side.

What about outstanding finance?

If your car has outstanding HP or PCP finance, we settle this directly with the lender as part of the transaction. The settlement amount is deducted from the total agreed price and the remainder is paid to you by bank transfer. You will receive a breakdown of the figures before anything is signed.
