What Documents Do You Need to Sell Your Car?

Having the right documents ready makes the sale faster, smoother and can increase the offer you receive. This guide covers everything you need and what to do if something is missing.

Essential documents

V5C (Logbook)

The V5C is the most important document. It shows who the registered keeper is and contains the vehicle's details. Without it, the sale can still proceed but it is more complex. If you do not have it, apply for a replacement from DVLA at gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla before selling if possible.

Both sets of keys

Missing a key reduces the offer because replacement keys — particularly smart/proximity keys — can cost several hundred pounds to replace. If you only have one key, declare this upfront.

Helpful documents (improve your offer)

MOT certificates

Current and previous MOT certificates show the vehicle's history. A full set demonstrates how the car has been maintained over time. Not essential, but positive.

Service history

Stamped service book or digital records showing regular servicing at appropriate intervals. Full service history can meaningfully increase the offer — particularly on higher-value vehicles. Dealer stamps carry more weight than independent garage stamps, though both are valued.

Purchase receipts and invoices

Receipts for recent work — tyres, brakes, timing belts, major repairs — demonstrate the car has been maintained. Keep these with the service book.

Finance documents

If the car is on HP, PCP or any other type of secured finance, you must declare this. Provide the finance agreement reference number and lender details. We will obtain a settlement figure directly. Do not attempt to sell a car with outstanding finance without declaring it — this could be considered fraud.

What if I am missing documents?

  • No V5C: Contact DVLA for a replacement (V62 form). Sale can still proceed but will take longer to transfer.
  • No service history: Lower offer likely. Cannot be resolved but be upfront.
  • One key missing: Declare upfront — it will be factored in.
  • No MOT certificates: Current MOT status can be checked online — certificates are helpful but not essential.
Tip: Gather everything you have in one folder before we arrive. Even partial documentation is better than nothing.
